They believe they don\u2019t deserve their jobs or success, or that they can never meet others\u2019 expectations. As a result, they feel like impostors or frauds at the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as imposter phenomenon or imposter experience, imposter syndrome at work is quite common. In fact, a Journal of General Internal Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7174434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imposter<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7174434\/\"> syndrome study<\/a> discovered that, while the numbers can vary, imposter syndrome affects as many as 82% of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carolynherfurth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carolyn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carolynherfurth\/\"> Herfurth<\/a>, a co-founder of the Impostor Syndrome Institute, whom we had the chance to speak to about the subject, despite the term \u201csyndrome\u201d, imposter syndrome is not a diagnosable disorder of any kind:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Carolyn-Herfurth-a-co-founder-of-Impostor-Syndrome-Institute-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5076\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cIt\u2019s this belief that millions of people worldwide share \u2014 that they are not as talented, intelligent, capable, or qualified as others think they are. And, the fascinating thing about it is that these feelings exist despite all the evidence of our accomplishments \u2014 diplomas, awards, business growth, promotion.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-you-know-your-employees-have-imposter-syndrome\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you know your employees have imposter syndrome?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some examples of typical behavior of a person having imposter syndrome:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Procrastinating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling like a fraud&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking for help being hard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Believing one is not worthy of praise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overworking (staying late or going to work early)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blaming and criticizing oneself for minor mistakes (while feeling as if others have everything under control)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rejecting new opportunities or avoiding challenges at work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still not sure if your employees suffer from the imposter phenomenon?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The author, psychologist, and co-creator of the term impostor syndrome, Dr. Pauline Rose Clance, created an <a href=\"https:\/\/paulineroseclance.com\/pdf\/IPTestandscoring.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impostor test<\/a> which helps determine whether someone has it or not, and to what extent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, to recognize the symptoms right away, it\u2019s also of tremendous help to know about the different types of impostor syndrome.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-5-types-of-impostor-syndrome\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 5 types of impostor syndrome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global Thought Leader on Impostor Syndrome, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/valerieyoung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Valerie Young<\/a>, has defined 5 main types of impostor syndrome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-perfectionist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Perfectionist&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Perfectionist sets a high standard and pays plenty of attention to detail. If the outcome is not 100% successful, they go over and over the mistake they\u2019ve made, unable to let it go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a consequence, the Perfectionists are rarely satisfied with how they did something, regardless of the actual quality of the work done.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-expert\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Expert<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Expert constantly feels like they\u2019re one certificate away from knowing just about everything. However, this never happens, so they tend to overprepare for tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees with this type of impostor syndrome constantly feel as if they\u2019ll be perceived as incompetent. Despite working in their field and acquiring specialized skills for years, the Experts feel they are incapable of handling their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-soloist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Soloist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the name suggests, the Soloist believes they should do every task on their own. Asking for help is unacceptable out of fear that others will think it\u2019s a sign of weakness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This <em>do-it-myself<\/em> mindset often leads to undertaking too many tasks and eventually causing burnout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-natural-genius\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Natural Genius<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Natural Genius feels like an imposter every time they cannot master something new right away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employees with this type of impostor syndrome usually grew up praised as smart, which led to them believing that acquiring new skills was easy. For them, only finishing a task quickly and successfully is a sign of one\u2019s competence \u2014 and everything else is failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-superhuman\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Superhuman<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Superhuman needs to excel in as many roles as possible, be it at work or in private life. Their self-worth is directly tied to how busy they are during the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employees experiencing this type of imposter syndrome feel guilty when they need to rest and take breaks. Just like Perfectionists, they\u2019ll try to be perfect at their role at work, but also a perfect friend, parent, and partner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-can-leaders-do-to-support-their-employees-in-combating-imposter-syndrome\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can leaders do to support their employees in combating imposter syndrome?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s now take a look at what managers can do to show support for their workers experiencing this syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"educate-yourself-and-your-team\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educate yourself and your team&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herfurth encourages managers to be proactive and educate their teams about imposter syndrome. It\u2019s also important for managers to educate themselves on the subject.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens when managers have no clue that their employees are experiencing imposter syndrome? Well, such managers can\u2019t reassure the employees that they <em>are<\/em> doing a good job. Finally, placing them in situations where they shine will generate a feeling of accomplishment and excitement about their contributions.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amy elaborates that by offering employees the space to practice materials ahead of time, managers can help them overcome feelings of doubt and build confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"advise-your-employees-to-keep-a-win-journal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advise your employees to keep a <em>win journal<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your employees aren\u2019t aware of the term <em>win journal<\/em>, inform them it\u2019s a simple way to keep track of all the moments when they received praise, were proud of themselves, or accomplished something big.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be a Google Docs document containing screenshots, diplomas, and citations of empowering messages they\u2019ve received. There\u2019s no right or wrong way to keep this type of journal \u2014 yet constantly reminding oneself of successful achievements can boost confidence and minimize self-doubt. Additionally, according to a Forbes article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alizaknox\/2024\/03\/31\/keep-a-daily-wins-journal-to-increase-stamina-and-motivation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping a win journal reduces stress<\/a> and anxiety and improves clarity and focus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"promote-transparency-within-the-team\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Promote transparency within the team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizational Psychologist, Executive Coach, and Author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/genacox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Gena Cox<\/a>, emphasizes that managers should not and cannot do anything about a team member\u2019s internal feelings.
