AI helps them be more productive, but isn\u2019t able to do the job itself without a human steering the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"8-ai-proof-jobs-and-why-they-cant-be-automated\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 AI-proof jobs (and why they can\u2019t be automated)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned, there are way more than 8 jobs AI can\u2019t replace; these 8 were chosen just to highlight what it is that makes jobs AI-proof so that you can take that logic and apply it to any job you\u2019re curious about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus is only on knowledge work careers, since I assume that if you\u2019re feeling threatened at your corporate job and want to know how you can make yourself essential while keeping seniority \u2014 you won\u2019t really care that cooking, plumbing, or nursing are AI-proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"creative-director\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creative director<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is not creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ask it to generate an image in the style of Vincent van Gogh, you\u2019ll get what you asked for, and it\u2019ll even be good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you ask it to generate an image in a completely new style that you\u2019ve envisioned, you\u2019ll get a mess because all AI can do is copy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, unless the creative direction for your company is to mimic a competitor, AI cannot replace human creative directors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a side note, this extends to the designers and illustrators who\u2019ll actually bring this creative direction to life since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finnegan.com\/en\/insights\/ip-updates\/supreme-court-declines-to-hear-thaler-v-perlmutter-leaving-human-authorship-requirement-intact.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI-generated images cannot be copyrighted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"data-strategy-consultant\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data strategy consultant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can process data at unprecedented speeds, but it cannot advise you on what data to put your hopes on (or commit your budget to).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The job of data strategy consultants is to analyze the data and figure out how to align it with business goals and values. Consumers catching wind of AI doing something like that would only add fuel to the fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"hr\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">HR<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of work disputes don\u2019t have a logical, data-driven answer to them. Instead, they require complex and nuanced conflict mediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of what an HR business partner does is closer to a political negotiation than it is to a math problem \u2014 redesigning an employee\u2019s role so that they don\u2019t quit, or mediating a meeting with two feuding department heads. AI cannot mediate these kinds of disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of this, legislation has already been passed in the EU, UK, and several US states that\u2019s going to require companies to have <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/article\/14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human oversight for talent decisions<\/a> to avoid algorithm bias. This makes careers such as hairdressers, dentists, chefs, veterinarians, pharmacists, construction workers, and so on pretty AI-proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same principle applies to knowledge work careers that require this kind of interaction, such as hardware\/server management and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"legislation-and-regulations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legislation and regulations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is still new, meaning there\u2019s not a lot of legislation surrounding it\u2026 yet! But as you\u2019ve seen from the list, a lot of it is already in the works. A lot of it will be passed over the years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, we are seeing laws that require human input for things like hiring to combat algorithm bias, or for human verification of documents presented as evidence in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, some careers will be safe even if AI could theoretically replace them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This notably includes AI art, since it cannot be copyrighted. Using AI to generate assets for your company could land you in trouble if the AI steals something that is copyrighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"accountability\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI cannot be legally or ethically held accountable for anything. This means jobs that require a high degree of accountability are inherently AI-proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m talking about judges, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and pilots. This also includes roles like CEOs, cybersecurity analysts, chief information security officers, and so on. All of these roles are safe because AI is quite literally incapable of replacing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"leadership\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a bunch of reasons why AI is unfit to perform leadership jobs, but even if we focus on just the computational side of things \u2014 which should be its bread and butter \u2014 it still comes up short.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because leadership requires you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make decisions with incomplete information, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>React to Black Swan events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Incomplete information is a problem for AI because it doesn&#8217;t have intuition, and it doesn\u2019t have guts (so it can\u2019t follow them either). It has pattern recognition, sure, but even that is based entirely on data that it has been trained on, which is where Black Swan events kick in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black Swan events are rare and unpredictable occurrences that lie outside the realm of normal expectations. The number of U.S. accountants in 1984 was approximately 900,000. In 2024, there were about 1.6 million accountants in the U.S. The number of accountants grew despite productivity tools, such as Quicken, because their tasks became more complicated thanks to globalized businesses, regulations, supply chain complexities, and such\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And, according to Brish, this is far from the only example. There were around 300,000 tellers in the US in 1970, the year when ATMs were first widely deployed \u2014 many of them fearing that it would be the end of their careers. It will make people more productive in doing their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"which-career-will-not-survive-ai\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which career will not survive AI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So what jobs have low AI-complimentarity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, these are careers where the human hand doesn\u2019t need to do a lot of AI steering. Think transcriptionists or data entry clerks. If your role is like this, consider this a red flag to warn you that what you do may soon be fully automated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also includes some careers that don\u2019t use any AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Amazon has developed the <em>Just Walk Out<\/em> technology that allows for checkoutless shopping. If this became commonplace, it would completely remove Retail Cashiers from the shopping equation, unlike with Software Engineers, where you need a human expert to guide the AI (and clean up after it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"reskilling-is-the-key-to-avoiding-ai-replacement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reskilling is the key to avoiding AI replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, you should have a good understanding of what it is that AI cannot automate. If your job involves leadership, accountability, the \u201chuman touch\u201d, or non-digital interactions, then you\u2019re safe.
