What role in DEI do leaders have and where to even start with building an inclusive company culture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In episode 3 of Future of Work Talks, we\u2019ve discussed the state of DEI and our role in it with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rhondamoret\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rhonda Moret<\/a>, CEO and Founder of Elevated Diversity,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alexiszahner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexis Zahner<\/a>, Co-Director and Founder of Human Leaders and podcast host, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chikereigbokwe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chikere Igbokwe<\/a>, Founder of Allyship and INCLUCIVE.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our panelists shared their hopes and fears about DEI in the workplace. They also highlighted the part leaders and everyone else in the organization have in achieving a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to take active steps in fostering DEI, check out the key panel takeaways and watch the full episode here:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The State of DEI | FUTURE OF WORK TALKS | EP 03\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v2LI2hypYfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"a-safe-space-fosters-a-dei-culture\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A safe space fosters a DEI culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to panelists, the most important aspect of building a more <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/diversity-in-communications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diverse, equitable, and inclusive company culture<\/a> is <strong>having all voices on the table<\/strong>. Furthermore, Igbokwe highlighted another vital aspect that enables actual change to happen \u2014 <strong>making all employees feel safe.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moret noticed that employees who are part of the dominant culture shut down when they hear about diversity, believing it doesn\u2019t involve them. But, for DEI to be imprinted in the company culture, every employee has to feel they have a part to play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make this happen, Moret\u2019s company organizes programming built around storytelling and active listening, believing that <em>\u201cif we&#8217;re able to tell our stories and feel comfortable telling our stories and feel like this is a safe space then we&#8217;re going to start being able to make some true progress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reason a part of the company could shut down and refrain from being part of the larger conversations is due to the existence of <a href=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/bias-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unconscious bias<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As our panelists explain, research shows bias is based on how our brain operates. Thus, instead of removing ourselves from conversations completely, we should take active steps to identify unconscious biases that exist within us. Zahner notes that <em>\u201cwe can&#8217;t check what we can&#8217;t see, so we need diverse perspectives to be able to check that in ourselves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, to achieve a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture, organizations have to create a safe, non-judgmental environment. In this environment, everybody understands they have a role to play. They aren\u2019t shying away from a conversation and are open to educating themselves and becoming more accountable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"leaders-should-look-from-within-first\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leaders should look from within first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As our panelists highlight, to be a good DEI leader, <strong>you have to be in it for the long haul.<\/strong> You also need to develop a deep form of self-awareness and understanding of the power you have in fostering an inclusive culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why Zahner starts her leadership development program with self-leadership. This part of the program relies on increasing self-awareness and understanding our power because <em>\u201cwe can \u2014 through our relationships, through the way that we work, through the conversations we have \u2014 influence change and those around us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once leaders get to know themselves, they can lead others. Zahner ends her program with radical responsibility which means <em>\u201ctaking continuous ownership of how we show up in the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating DEI into the culture is not a one-and-done conversation. Zahner highlights that <em>&nbsp;\u201cit&#8217;s really about having the perseverance and the discipline to continually rethink and evolve how we lead so that we can meet the needs of our team members.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"a-hopeful-but-uncertain-future-for-dei\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A hopeful but uncertain future for DEI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Igbokwe emphasizes that new generations are having bolder conversations and that DEI has become a priority.
