A Forbes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/councils\/forbestechcouncil\/2023\/03\/23\/how-will-recent-tech-layoffs-affect-the-it-labor-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis of the tech labor crunch<\/a> shows that laid-off IT workers find new jobs within just a couple of months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what can tech companies do to attract and retain top talent?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked to the representatives of 3 tech companies about the biggest challenges they face in terms of tech talent management \u2014 and how they address them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/biljana-rakic\/?originalSubdomain=rs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biljana Rakic<\/a>, VP of Human Capital at <a href=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAKE.com<\/a>, the unicorn company behind popular work tools, <a href=\"https:\/\/clockify.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clockify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pumble<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/plaky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plaky<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fahadsheikhfadi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fahad Sheikh<\/a>, Head of Growth and Product at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntaskmanager.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nTask<\/a>, a project management tool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jkaljundi\/?originalSubdomain=ee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">J\u00fcri Kaljundi<\/a>, Co-Founder at <a href=\"https:\/\/weekdone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weekdone<\/a>, an Objectives and Key Results (OKR) tool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-biggest-challenges-of-tech-talent-management\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The biggest challenges of tech talent management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The professionals we interviewed shared the biggest challenges they have faced in tech talent management \u2014 and explained why these challenges have been the biggest issues they have encountered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lack of candidates and false promises of quick retraining,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finding the right candidate fit, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees leaving due to micromanagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"challenge-1-lack-of-candidates-and-false-promises-of-quick-retraining\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge #1: Lack of candidates and false promises of quick retraining<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HR professionals in the tech industry are acutely aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/tech-talent-tectonics-ten-new-realities-for-finding-keeping-and-developing-talent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">huge skill gap in the tech job market<\/a>. That gap is compensated for through retraining programs, which are sometimes good \u2014 but often not so great.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The problem is that retraining programs are then used for propaganda purposes, to send a one-way message of fast learning and good pay \u2014 which is not the case in the market. But seasoned professionals make sure they stay ahead of the game by finding what works best for them through trial and error.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the above challenges in mind, we asked our interlocutors about the tried and true ingredients of their internal tech talent strategies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We bring you their top tips for developing a tech talent strategy that works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-1-invest-effort-into-keeping-the-acquired-talent\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #1: Invest effort into keeping the acquired talent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Acquiring tech talent is hard \u2014 but keeping it is close to an Olympic sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, according to a LinkedIn study, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/talent-strategy\/industries-with-the-highest-turnover-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tech industry has the highest turnover rate<\/a> \u2014 13.2%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your talent strategy ends at acquisition, you\u2019re bound to join the grim statistics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s essential to keep tending to your people continually if you want them to stay with you. You then need to communicate this clearly to everyone \u2014 and be open to feedback along the way.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Communication is never one-way! You need to listen to your employees and team managers when coming up with plans and objectives or deciding on how you measure their progress towards success. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/plaky.com\/blog\/okr-project-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>OKRs [Objectives and Key Results]<\/em><\/a><em>are a great way to achieve that.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s not enough to simply set goals and hope for the best. This will keep people motivated and engaged. Weekly team meetings and one-on-ones are both good places to have these regular check-ins.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-3-create-tailor-made-mentorship-programs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #3: Create tailor-made mentorship programs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tech companies usually do provide mentorship programs to new hires \u2014 but the key is to customize them for each individual employee. They follow a base format \u2014 there are certain elements they all have in common, i.e., our programs have 6 strategic points all employees have to go through. It can also be a coworker from the team. If all team members are seniors, they can\u2019t mentor each other per se, but they can practice a kind of intervision \u2014 a sort of peer mentorship.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-4-help-with-social-integration\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #4: Help with social integration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentorship programs help employees adapt to how the company operates, but Biljana believes social integration plays another important role in tech talent management.
