No solid justification rather than staying in their comfort zones and schemes that have been present on global employment markets for a long time.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover,&nbsp; That said, there are a number of companies and industries captained largely by &#8220;graybeards&#8221; where the aging management model wants all the chickens back in the coop full-time, if only because that&#8217;s the only way they know how to manage.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"some-employers-are-focused-on-employee-retention\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some employers are focused on employee retention&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President of Marketing at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motivosity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Motivosity<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/loganmallory\/\" target=\"_blank\">Logan Mallory<\/a>, argues that employee retention remains the top focus for many businesses:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1023\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png\" alt=\"Logan Mallory\" class=\"wp-image-1297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png 1023w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-768x769.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cEmployers WANT to create a workplace that&#8217;s compelling \u2014 and most want to be a great employer.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he also acknowledges that problems arise because employers manage different types of people \u2014 and then try to accommodate everyone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1023\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png\" alt=\"Logan Mallory\" class=\"wp-image-1297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png 1023w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-768x769.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201c[Their] team members have different life needs, different preferences, different work histories, and different personalities. An employer can&#8217;t possibly accommodate every need and every want.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mallory adds that employees have to be more understanding of these limitations on the part of their employers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1023\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png\" alt=\"Logan Mallory\" class=\"wp-image-1297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png 1023w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-768x769.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cEmployees need to understand that employers have limitations on resources (expertise, time, money). There are certain workplace circumstances that SHOULD be adhered to (inclusion, safety, integrity, etc.) \u2014 but that doesn&#8217;t mean they can provide the workplace that each team member sees as the dream situation.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, for Mallory, employers and employees should be on the same page goal-wise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1023\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png\" alt=\"Logan Mallory\" class=\"wp-image-1297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory.png 1023w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Logan-Mallory-768x769.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201c<em>At the end of the day, however, employees and employers do have the same end goal: to have an enjoyable work experience, one that they look forward to and thoroughly enjoy. It is also about what both sides can bring to the table to meet that goal.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"some-believe-employers-should-focus-on-user-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some believe employers should focus on \u201cuser experience\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although she believes that many employers want to go back to as things were, Harris says there are also employers who understand the need to change and challenge their workplaces. Yet, this can be a bit tricky, she elaborates:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Nadia-Harris.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4180\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cSome propose connecting the office with work-from-home elements, to create a win-win solution for both sides. Well, this won&#8217;t work in my opinion, as hybrid work isn&#8217;t about connecting the &#8220;old normal&#8221; with the &#8220;new normal&#8221; \u2014 but creating a scalable employee experience that embraces flexibility, human connections, and productivity.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In her recent book, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bookboon.com\/en\/how-to-tackle-hybrid-working-ebook\" target=\"_blank\"><em>How to tackle hybrid working<\/em><\/a>, Harris explains a unique point of view \u2014 companies should be approached as websites and <strong>should be focusing more on user experience<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Nadia-Harris.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4180\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cThis is everything, really. There&#8217;s a big need to focus on intrinsic motivation rather than just incentives for employees. If someone else can do the same job at the same quality for less money \u2014 they&#8217;ll hire that person. We\u2019ve definitely seen the headlines of big names completely trashing the idea of remote work. (Never mind the fact that even some of them have benefited from remote work in the past.)&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But some companies are definitely seeing the value of flexibility \u2014 and, if their sales numbers and productivity numbers haven\u2019t dropped over this remote period, I think it\u2019s easier for them to consider keeping remote work as an option. Either in a hybrid kind of way or for some companies, permanently.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The founder of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/spreadgreatideas.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spread Great Ideas<\/a> and CallerSmart, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/briandavidcrane\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brian David Crane<\/a>, believes that WFH (as in \u2018work from home\u2019) or hybrid work structure was never a possible reality 3 or 4 years ago. You can\u2019t see people working away anymore (which still may have been presenteeism) or hear them getting on the phone to make a sales call.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For employers that got most of their social interactions in the office, remote stresses them out. It\u2019s uncomfortable. And they\u2019re struggling. They want their business to produce results.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Employees look for companies where they can use their skills and actually do the job \u2014 without stressing themselves about their micromanaging boss or toxic work culture, or obsolete procedures. They want to make an impact with their work, and to feel respected and accepted.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So employers and employees basically want the same thing: <\/em><strong><em>to get the job done<\/em><\/strong><em>. It\u2019s just that employees often want more autonomy and flexibility than employers are ready to give. There are some trust issues to overcome. Employees are afraid of being exploited if they go above and beyond; employers are afraid of being taken advantage of, so they have a hard time letting go of control.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"some-think-the-command-and-control-mindset-doesnt-work-anymore\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some think the command and control mindset doesn\u2019t work anymore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For many employers, working in an office was a great way to know what\u2019s going on in their companies. It should ultimately foster creativity and innovation that drives business outcomes.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But there\u2019s a management problem in the new world of work \u2014 namely, how to oversee teamwork.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>No longer is \u2018management by walking around\u2019 an option. Trust is key here, and a typical \u201ccommand and control\u2019 mindset doesn\u2019t work well in remote and hybrid settings.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Instead, managers need to shift their attention to output \u2014 and, even better, to outcomes.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"some-believe-employers-need-to-adapt-their-premises\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some believe employers need to adapt their premises&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wheatley says that a large evidence base shows that employees don\u2019t want to be monitored and controlled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what do they want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, they want a flexible approach that helps them keep up with the diversity of their needs:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div need) and (at least some) non-monetary rewards: perks, belonging, self-actualization, meaning, contributing to something bigger than themselves, etc.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The public discourse often antagonizes these or speaks about what the company and what the employees want as if they were opposed. The order of those priorities can be different, but they are not diametrically opposite. If we only believe in zero-sum-games, well, then only one of these two \u201csides\u201d, can \u201cwin\u201d \u2014 which is bleak.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-might-change-or-stay-the-same-in-the-future\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What might change or stay the same in the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We might want it all (like the song by Queen implies) \u2014 but we might not be in the position to get it&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many options and choices, it\u2019s expected that we lean toward some work trends and completely disregard others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future of our work is closer than we think but what trends will be shaping it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s find out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"some-jobs-will-continue-to-be-subsumed-by-digitalization\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some jobs will continue to be subsumed by digitalization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Catlette feels that certain jobs will keep being affected by digitalization. I firmly believe that this will be the impetus for more companies opting for a 4-day workweek.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, since more of Gen Z is slowly becoming part of the global workforce, companies that haven\u2019t clearly defined and openly stated their mission won\u2019t be able to keep their employees put:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Art-Shaikh.jpeg\" alt=\"Art Shaikh\" class=\"wp-image-1285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Art-Shaikh.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Art-Shaikh-300x300.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>\u201cI also believe that as Gen Z becomes more entrenched in the workplace, you will start to see high turnover rates. More and more, companies that are not mission-driven are having a hard time retaining employees \u2014 because, at the end of the day, it&#8217;s just a job, indistinguishable from other jobs.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"high-turnover-will-continue\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">High turnover will continue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mallory warns that employees will be going after higher salaries.
